WOMTP4SM WILLIAM (BILLY O) JOHN OBRIEN

The SAA is saddened to advise of the passing of former SAA member Billy O’Brien.

Billy joined the RAN in the early 1970s and the submarine service soon after completing his stoker’s courses. He trained at HMS Dolphin in the United Kingdom before qualifying as a submariner and being awarded his Dolphins on HMAS Onslow in 1974.

He would eventually serve on four of the RAN’s six Oberon Class submarines: HMAS Onslow (1974-75,and 1989-91), HMAS Ovens (1975-77), HMAS Otama (1981-83), and HMAS Oxley (1984-86).

In 1986, Bill returned to the United Kingdom to train as a periscope maintainer, serving at HMS Neptune Submarine Base at Faslane in Scotland. He retired from the RAN as a Warrant Officer.

Bill suffered a head injury in a fall a number of years ago and his health had been in decline since then. In June 2025 he was hospitalised, and his condition was such that he had to move into aged care. Where he passed away on the 17 th of July 2026

The SAA extends its condolences to Bill’s wife of four decades Hazel, and his extended family and friends. Funeral details will be advised when known.
